Today, I received an inquiry from a client. After receiving the drawings, I realized that the client’s design was too idealized and, given certain cost constraints, it simply cannot be realized. The product involves light-blocking blocks used in a certain product, with two different models. The maximum length and width of both models are less than 20mm, one has a thickness of 2.45mm and the other 9mm. For the 9mm one, it needs to be hollowed from the middle and then reduced inward by a few millimeters before hollowing through. Because it is so small, the thinnest edge is only 1mm. If it were a metal part, this requirement would not be a problem at all. Even if it were a hard plastic part, it would be feasible. But what we are working with is soft foam material, and under normal conditions, fixing the workpiece is already an issue, let alone processing it.
If the whole piece were hollow, it might be possible to use laser cutting, and the precision could be guaranteed, but since it also has steps, laser processing is out of the question. The options are CNC machining or molding, with no other alternatives. However, the customer’s order quantity is fewer than 50 pieces, so molding is not a very realistic solution. We wanted to give the customer some modification suggestions, but since the customer cannot provide specific information about the product’s usage and application, we had to give up.
Our foam products are often used as auxiliary materials. Even when processed into certain products, they are mainly for auxiliary purposes. They may be used as packaging inserts, product trays, or protective positioning… EVA itself has very wide applications. When engineers or designers come up with plans for their own products, if they are not familiar with this material, unsure of how far it can be processed, or uncertain how to reduce costs, the best approach is to first contact relevant manufacturers, either by providing ideas or drawings. This way, we can provide suggestions or references for your design from a practical production perspective. Moreover, in this situation, it is best to communicate with downstream manufacturers. Material manufacturers understand materials, but they are more concerned with how to ensure uniform foaming and increase yield; they do not have the experience in subsequent processing that professional processing factories possess.
Of course, if what you need is just simple sealing or shockproofing, and the shape and precision requirements are not high, then going directly to a material factory is definitely the most cost-effective approach, as long as your order quantity meets the MOQ. But for complex shapes and multi-layer processing requirements, only processing enterprises can meet your needs. The difference lies in whether your product’s appearance and precision requirements are high or low. For low requirements, die-cutting can be considered. If you want it to be formed in one piece, then you need to consider a CNC engraving processing factory like ours.
